KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested four individuals in Perak on suspicion of abuse of power and false claims valued at around RM60,000.
A married couple, a deputy director, and an entrepreneur are among the suspects involved in a project to supply and plant trees on approximately 40ha.
According to sources, the main suspects are believed to be two women, aged 38 and 48, who worked for a government agency. The other two suspects are males, aged 43 and 38, who held managerial positions in a company and were also business owners.
"The main suspects are alleged to have abused their position in December 2022 by directing their subordinates to prepare false reports on the tree planting project and recommending payment to a company owned by their respective husbands.
"Meanwhile, the deputy director is suspected of approving the payment, even though he was aware that the tree planting work was not fully carried out," the source added.
The source said that all the suspects were reportedly arrested at the Perak MACC office yesterday evening when they were requested to provide statements.
A seven-day remand order until Oct 24, was issued by magistrate Atifah Hazimah Wahab after the MACC applied for it in the Ipoh magistrate's court earlier today.
Meanwhile, the Perak MACC director, Ahmad Sabri Mohamed, confirmed the arrests and said that the investigation was being conducted under Sections 18 and 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
